Tapered roller bearings
Tapered roller bearings are particularly suitable for handling combined loads because they absorb forces at an angle to the shaft axis. Since the outer ring does not have a rib, the bearing can be disassembled. However, the bearing can only absorb axial forces through the angle in one direction. This is why double-row tapered roller bearings or tapered roller bearings placed against each other are often used in an X or O arrangement.

Technical information
Contact angle
The contact angle is a crucial factor when it comes to the axial load capacity: the greater the angle, the more the bearing can be subjected to higher axial loads. Most series have a contact angle between 10° and 16°. The 313 and 323 series have larger contact angles of approx. 30° and can therefore be subjected to very high axial loads.
Bearing arrangement
Tapered roller bearings are usually installed in pairs in an X or O arrangement.
Abutment dimensions and radial runout accuracy have a decisive impact on the service life and function of rolling bearings. The selection of the shaft, housing and bearing tolerance should therefore always be checked in advance.
The following tolerance classes are available:
- Standard tolerances available ex stock: P0/PN
- Special tolerances: P6, P5
Only cages made of steel sheet are used for tapered roller bearings.
Since the cages protrude laterally beyond the flat surface, the connection dimensions must be observed.

A lubricant selection that is precisely tailored to the application conditions contributes disproportionately to the service life both in a positive and in a negative sense. For this reason, the technical and economical optimization of lubricant is an important contribution made by our application consulting.
An essential property of greases and oils is the reliable mechanical separation of the rolling element from the raceway. Depending on the application, you need special types of grease to achieve this function. The following properties in particular affect the function:
- the starting and operating temperature
- the speed of the bearing
- the external ambient conditions (moisture, contamination, vapors/gases...)
Our application engineer would be happy to analyze your application conditions and recommend suitable lubricants.
