The measures involve investments in alternative fuels (e.g., biogas or green electricity).
- Use of biogas trucks: Biogas or bio-CNG (CNG = Compressed Natural Gas) as an environmentally friendly, alternative fuel is used for pick-up and linehaul. For this purpose, new CNG trucks are procured as an alternative to diesel trucks, and our own on-site gas filling stations are set up to address the sparse public CNG filling station network.
- Use of hydrotreated vegetable oil as a fuel: Hydrotreated vegetable oils (HVO) are used as an alternative fuel to diesel for vehicles on our DHL operating premises.
When vehicles are used on public roads, a maximum of up to 26% HVO may be blended with regular B7 diesel.
However, vehicles that are used exclusively on our own premises, e.g., swap-body movers, are refueled for this insetting measure at on-site filling stations with 100% HVO (HVO100). HVO100 typically saves over 80% of greenhouse gas emissions compared to diesel. - Injection of biogas as an energy carrier into the German natural gas grid: We purchase biogas certificates that correspond to the injection of a specific quantity of biogas into the German natural gas grid. Biogas has a significantly lower CO2 emission intensity than fossil natural gas and, under the mass balance method, replaces the energy carrier for our gas heating systems in our sorting centers.
- Use of heat pumps in ZSP in-house builds: As part of the insetting measure, additional delivery bases are equipped with air-source heat pumps to replace the fossil energy carriers previously used for heating. Since the heat pumps are operated with electricity generated in an environmentally friendly way, substantial amounts of greenhouse gas emissions can be saved compared to the use of fossil energy carriers.
- Electric trucks: Procurement of electric trucks and operation with electricity generated in an environmentally friendly way as an alternative drive to the internal combustion engine. The electric trucks are procured as a direct replacement for our diesel trucks; for this we are setting up the corresponding charging infrastructure at our sites.
- E-delivery vehicles: Procurement of additional electrically powered delivery vehicles. These vehicles are charged at our delivery bases with electricity generated in an environmentally friendly way and thus ensure a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to the use of delivery vehicles with diesel drive, which as of today (2022) are still in the majority.
